The Dumbing Of America

Wait, the earth revolves around the sun?

There was another article on the same theme last week in the NY Times, I think they referenced the author. It's funny that anti-intellectualism goes back to RW Emerson and the early 19th century. The difference now is that the populace seems arrogant in not knowing things, which I don't know if that is dangerous or just weird.

One part of that article was interesting, when the cultural critic says that readers are more capable of making informed decisions when reading print articles over video articles. The writer just throws that in there, but that is too casual a claim. I don't think people fall into hunches necessarily, although when watching a video argument people are probably influenced by different factors (that speaker is more attractive, nicer, smiles more, etc.) But I don't think people just fall into hunches. Credibility is still the most important factor in determining persuasion.

I should be working.
